One of my favourite times of the year is when the Interior Design Show rolls into our city. It’s a fun time to see designer friends, explore new products and meet new vendors.

I won’t bore you with a full tour, but let me give you Cole’s notes version of what’s new and hot in the design world.

This year’s design concept house was created by Backcountry Hut Company. The Great Lakes Cabin was so on point with all of us searching for more peace, quiet and a stronger connection with nature. The house was small, but the zen and minimal interior drew me in and I could definitely picture myself spending a good chunk of summer recharging in this ultra cool cabin.

Speaking of being outside in nature, something we will see more and more of is outdoor kitchens. And when I say outdoor kitchens, I mean fully outfitted spaces with sink, fridge, multiple cooking surfaces. Outdoor rated products have come a long way, there is no shortage of tailored solutions to create a dream outdoor living space with beautiful cabinetry, countertops and top of the line appliances.

Kitchens are still and I predict always will be the hottest topics in design. We all want the best kitchen since we spend so much time in it.  There are lots of new products out there, but one in particular caught my attention; it is Blanco’s Ikon apron front sink with a low divider. The design merged two desirable features together successfully; you get the farmhouse look with the apron front style sink and the practical divided bowl in one. It’s a first on the market and I think it’s brilliant!

If you are embarking on a kitchen or bathroom renovation this year, vertically stacked tile is an idea you should consider. It’s classic, but feels modern and unexpected in a way. I love this look. Easily achievable with simple subway tiles, or beautiful with handmade tiles.

Benjamin Moore has launched a new paint line, called the Century Collection. The Century Collection is small batch interior paint available in a curated palette of 75 pre-mixed colours–each with unprecedented depth and richness. You have to see it in person, it’s matte, chalky, and feels super luxurious. Ideal for a dining room or library. I fell in love with Black Currant (T4), but check out the whole collection here to see what inspires you: https://www.experiencecentury.com/en-ca/century-paint-colours

A brand new company, Dezign Market showcased a fabulous collection of bathroom vanities. Loved the unexpected colours, beautiful hardware choices and the easy, user-friendly shopping experience.

One thing I always look for is new talent, especially local startups. This year it was Shayne Fox hardware that stole the show. Shayne creates unique cast bronze hardware for interior applications. The products are simple, solid, clean-lined, and feature soft tumbled surfaces. The subtle earthiness of the bronzes she uses combined with the shapes makes her hardware well suited for our projects. I look forward to incorporating her work into our upcoming design projects.
